About IELTS exam

The International English Language Testing System, more commonly known as IELTS, is universally recognised as a mandatory examination for individuals seeking to study, work, or migrate to English-speaking countries. Because of its worldwide recognition, IELTS is an effective way to assess someone’s English skills and greatly impacts their opportunities abroad.

Types of IELTS examination

IELTS is available in two different  versions:

Academic IELTS

General Training IELTS

Structure of IELTS examination

Understanding the structure of the IELTS examination is important for effective preparation and success. The IELTS examination is composed of four core sections, each targeting specific language skills:

Listening Section

  • Test-takers listen to various recorded materials and answer questions based on what they hear.
  • Duration: Approximately 40 minutes, including 10 minutes for transferring answers to the answer sheet.
  • Number of questions: 40
  • These may include multiple-choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labeling, and form/note/table/flow-chart/summary completion questions.

Writing Section

  • The Writing section of the IELTS exam consists of two tasks: Task 1 and Task 2.
  • Duration: 60 minutes.
  • Number of tasks: 2
  • In Task 1 (Academic) or Task 1 (General Training), you might be asked to describe visual data or write a formal or informal letter (General Training). Task 2 involves essay writing in response to a specific topic.

Reading Section

  • The Reading section tests the ability to understand written texts in English.
  • Duration: 60 minutes including 10 minutes for transferring answers to the answer sheet.
  • Number of questions: 40
  • These may include multiple-choice, true/false/not given, matching, sentence completion, and summary completion questions.

Speaking Section

  • The Speaking section involves a direct in-person interview with an IELTS examiner.
  • Duration: 11-14 minutes.
  • The Speaking section is divided into three parts: Part 1 (Introduction and Interview), Part 2 (Short Speech), and Part 3 (Discussion). Each part evaluates different aspects of your speaking ability.
